Great for stargazing
I purchased this produt to stargaze. The wide angle lens allow for a large amount of starlight to reach your eyes. The low magnification keep the binoculars steady in your hands. I used them durring the last meteor shower. You can see the faint meteors with these binocs. This product is perfect for the beginer stargazer. Binoculars are the first item one should purchase when starting out night sky viewing anyway. I did the reaserch on which low powered binocular were best….this is the one.
Barska 8×40 Xtreme view
I bought the Barska 8×40 based on the specsheet after quite a bit of comparison. Shipping was prompt and well wrapped. The usual specs are engraved and says ‘Made in China’.
There is a slight blue-green lens coating, but still some reflection. Pleasent surprise: this model has a diopter adjust and a tripod mount- not mentioned in the features. The width and focus adjust is smooth and a bit tight: seems like the adjustment stays put. The minimum width brings both optical halves together and corresponds to about a 60mm IPD; the max is pretty wide- probably way over 80mm.
Needed to set width carefully. Straight ahead viewing is fine, but occluded by the internals if you set the width a bit too wide. When looking off center, the field of view is totally blocked by the internals. You can compensate somewhat by widening the adjustment: a Big disappointment here.
As I mentioned, FOV and magnification look fine (but I wonder what the ‘real’ specs are). For the occlusion issue I give this a 3 out of 5.
